McLaren is still out in front when it comes to developing composite materials that bring lightness and strength to its designs, and in 1981, McLaren created Formula 1’s first carbon fiber monocoque chassis. Car MP4/1 was first to roll out using the technology that formed the chassis and body of the car in one piece from carbon fiber. It claimed its first victory at the 1981 British Grand Prix, then proved its strength by protecting driver John Watson in a 140 mph crash at Monza later in the year. The rest of Formula 1 followed, but McLaren had both changed the game and took the lead.

The final stages of production of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren took place at a designated assembly facility at the McLaren Technology Centre. Insiders lift the lid on how the squad’s clean streak of wins eventually came to a halt, while Nichols looks back on Senna’s “incredible” team radio response to clinching his debut Formula 1 world championship at Suzuka.

The cars finished the race in fifth for Norris and sixth for Piastri, rounding off the 2023 season for McLaren, seeing them take fourth place in the constructors’ championship, with Norris taking sixth and Piastri taking ninth in the drivers’ championship. McLaren introduced further upgrades to the MCL60 at the Singapore Grand Prix, where Piastri, having been impeded by Lance Stroll’s heavy crash, started seventeenth with Norris in fourth. This is also Piastri’s first podium finish in Formula One.[192] Piastri won the Qatar Grand Prix sprint race, marking McLaren’s first sprint race victory in Formula One; both would recover from lower grid positions in the main race to finish second and third respectively. The Mexican Grand Prix saw Norris knocked out in Q1 after being unable to set a competitive lap time, due to mistakes and yellow flags. The team decided against running a fresh power unit and incurring penalties despite the low grid position and losing some engine components at the first race in Bahrain[195] and Norris recovered to a brilliant fifth place finish, ahead of Piastri in eighth.
